Creating a shop “Standard Operating Procedure” for a general machine/gunsmith shop

Personal Safety- First and foremost, everyone is responsible for safety. If you or anyone sees an unsafe act you are entitled to address it with the individual or shop management. Regarding your own personal safety, we require that you wear the proper personal protective equipment and follow all guidelines for safety considerations on or near any of our machine equipment.

Machine training- We would like to see all of our staff cross-trained on equipment so everyone has at least a general understanding of how it works. Please do not attempt to use any of the equipment in this facility without the proper training and supervision first. For you to use a specific machine on your own you must demonstrate to management a proficiency on it first and be certified.

Holding and adjustments- While holding or adjusting any item or machine being worked with in this facility it is important to take the proper safety measures to ensure that you or those around you avoid serious bodily injury. Machine adjustments specifically should be done while the machine is off and power is pulled. This is to ensure that you do not damage the machine in any way and that the machine cannot accidentally be turned on during your adjustment.

Moving material- There are a number of different materials in this shop that can be hazardous to your health. These can come in the form of a solid or a liquid and should be handled with the proper safety equipment while transporting. If you are injured while moving any materials in this facility, please see management immediately so they can get you the first aid needed to address the injury.

Shop layout- Please take the time to learn our shop layout. Because of the volume of business we do and the number of staff we have, it is important to know who and what is around you at all points in time. You may see the same piece of equipment in multiple areas of the shop. This means it has a specific purpose to that area and should be used as intended. If you need a piece of equipment that is not in our facility, please notify management and we will do our best to get you what you need to complete the job appropriately.

Lighting- it is important that you can see what you are doing as you are doing it. Every area of the shop should have adequate lighting but in some cases the machine you are using has its own light source to better see the object being worked. If at any point you cannot see what you are doing because of poor lighting, please notify shop management and they will work to remedy the situation as soon as possible.

Cleanliness- We do expect some areas of the shop to get dirty as things are being worked on. The buildup of this type of mess can be dangerous and can cause damage to the item being worked. Please do your best to clean up any mess left behind before moving on to another area of the shop. Keeping up with the overall cleanliness of the shop is everyone’s responsibility and is important to the success of the business.

Dust and chip collection- Some machines in this shop will create an abundance of dust, debris and metal flakes or chips. It is important that the user uses the proper personal protective equipment while operating machines that do this. It is also important that the individual making this type of mess in the shop clean their workstation before moving on to the next. It may take more time to finish the item being worked on because of this but it is vital to the cleanliness and overall success of this business and will be managed by every employee working in this facility.
