Describe the AK-47 and explain the method a shooter would use to adjust for accuracy at distance

1. What is the intended purpose of the firearm (i.e. target applications, combat, home defense, hunting, etc.)? Include details; for example, if it’s a hunting firearm, what type of terrain or hunting style does the shooter expect to use the firearm?

More times than not the intended purpose of the AK-47 is combat. Though individual owners in countries that are not experiencing war tend to use them for target practice, of the millions upon millions made by different countries and manufacturers, most end up in the hands of fighters around the world. This is because the piston driven system makes this firearm work in just about any environment imaginable.

2. How well suited is the sight to the intended purpose of the firearm? Is there another sighting option that would be preferable? Thoroughly explain your answer.

The Iron Sights on the AK-47 are very well suited to the firearm. The front sight usually has a loop of metal to protect the front sight post from damage or unintended manipulation. The rear tangent iron sight usually uses a square notch that has no windage adjustment. Both windage and elevation can be adjusted on the front sight post. With this being said, I do prefer iron sights over any type of red dot or telescoping sight. The reason for this is because your iron sights can’t run out of battery and have no glass lens to break.

3. Provide a detailed explanation of the method the shooter should use to adjust this sight for accuracy at various distances. Are tools required for adjustment, and if so, which ones?

Most AK-47’s are relatively easy to adjust for distance shooting. The front sight is adjustable, and this is how you would adjust the windage and elevation. Once the front sight on an AK-47 is set to zero with the rear, you would use the rear iron sights slide bar to raise and drop the tangent sight to account for the distance being fired. This doesn’t require any additional tools to do as the slide bar has spring loaded push buttons on both sides to lock and unlock the sight to the desired distance being fired.
