Describe the Purpose of a Choke and the Installation Procedure for a Ventilated Rib

The purpose of the chock inside the muzzle of a shotgun barrel is to keep the shot that is being fired in the pattern one desires when firing. Some chokes force the shot to group tighter while others may allow for a larger spread on target. Our customer here has requested that a choke be installed that would give him 45% shot charge at 40Yds. That means that about 45% of the BB shot coming out of the firearm lands on target at 40Yds. I believe this to be a wider choke as most would like to see a tighter 70% shot charge at 40Yds. Installing a choke is relatively simple with the right tool. I have seen people try to use flat head screw drivers on one of the notches of the choke to try to loosen it enough to remove it the rest of the way by hand. I would never recommend doing this as you may damage the choke thus affecting the accuracy of the shot being fired. You may also damage the threads that the choke threads into and this means an expensive fix or a new barrel to remedy the issue. Using a choke tool allows the user to catch both of the notches on the choke and with a key like turn it will thread the choke out without damaging the threads the choke screws into.

I have found two ways to attach vented ribs to a shotgun barrel. One attaches to the barrel by using a type of epoxy to bond it to the barrel and the other uses a soft tin/lead solder to create a solid bond and a more permanent bond. If you want to do this job yourself, I would advise using the epoxy method because it is less permanent and if done incorrectly you can use a braded fishing line to remove it. The braded line should make its way under the vented rib and separate the epoxy tape Add a Rib uses to attach the new ribbing. If you wanted to solder the new vented rib to the existing barrel it would require that you first expose the metal where the rib is going to be attached. It is important that you don’t grind away too much so you will not need to fix this later on. Place the vented rib you plan to attach to the barrel and mark all the spots where it touches the barrel. Be sure it is lined up correctly before marking the contact points or you may be attaching the rib crooked and need to start from scratch. After exposing the contact points on the barrel add some flux to the contact points on the vented rib, heat it up just enough to apply a little solder and let this cool off. Then place the pre soldered vented rib in place and clamp it down to the barrel again making sure it is not crooked. Apply more heat and flux to the sections that touch and the flux should pull in the solder and create a solid bond between the vented rib and the barrel. You may need to apply more flux and solder as you go along but be sure not to use so much solder that it protrudes at the contact points.
