Discuss the definition of what makes a rifle accurate and what makes it inaccurate.

For this question I will reference an article titled “Basic Rifle Accuracy and Ballistics” posted by Terminal Ballistics Research. “If the rifle will be used out to 300 yards or beyond, it will need to be capable of grouping 1” or less at 100 yards.” I agree with the author of this online article because having a large shot group at 100 yards means an even larger shot group at 300 yards. With regards to hunting, this could result in a bad shot that could wound an animal but maybe not kill it. The author agrees that with larger shot groups “it is unethical to shoot at game.”

Later in the article the author begins to describe the definition of an inaccurate rifle by stating “if a rifle produces groups of around 1.5” at 100 yards, it is unsuitable for 300-yard shooting.” Once more I agree with the author and would like to stress how unsafe this could be to try. Any missed shot must land somewhere and if the individual firing becomes too focused on the target and is taking a shot at 300 yards with a rifle that is unsuitable of hitting accurately, they may miss and hit an unintended target, person, or animal.

What I see a lot in my profession as an NRA instructor and RSO at the range are shooters who buy amazing rifles and scopes with no idea how to use them. The author concludes “that most people are capable of shooting accurately with almost no experience if they are 1) given an accurate rifle and 2) set up appropriately.” I can get on board with this statement, however, if I could add to it, I would say that the user should be shown how to use the equipment available to them and be taught some shooting basics. Something as simple as breathing while shooting can ruin a shot at 300 yards and if someone “with almost no experience” doesn’t know this then making that shot safely and accurately becomes increasingly difficult.
