Checkering may have different purposes depending on who you are asking. For
example, someone looking to have a very detailed checkering job done on a “show”
firearm may say that it is for the design and overall aesthetic. However, an individual
who actively uses their firearm who is asking for checkering work may be doing so to
increase their grip on the firearm thus giving them more overall control of their shots.
The work you have done is ultimately up to you so consider your reason for having it
done.
When attempting to apply a pattern to a stock using a decal, there are a few
things you want to do and take into consideration. First, you will want to trim the pattern
at the dotted lines provided. Separate it into three patterns both for your grip panels and
your forend. Next, they require soaking in water for a short period of time. Be sure to do
this just long enough for them to separate from the backing paper. Now take a moist rag
and dampen the sections of the stock you intend to place on the decal. This is also
cleaning the area you intend to work in. Slide the decals off the backing paper and onto
the stock and once they are in place check for proper alignment. Finally, once in their
intended spots, smooth over the area with a cloth and get rid of any access water. Allow
adequate time to dry, probably about an hour or so, and now you can start checkering.
