Jacketed Hollow Point (JHP) Ammunition Brands & Types

A jacketed hollow point (JHP) bullet is a type of ammunition designed specifically for self-defense purposes. It is commonly used by civilians, law enforcement personnel, and military personnel for personal protection.

JHP bullets have a lead core that is partially or completely encased in a harder metal jacket, typically copper. The tip of the bullet is hollowed out, creating a cavity or hollow point. When the bullet impacts a target, the hollow point is designed to expand, causing the bullet to deform and transfer a significant amount of energy into the target.

There are a few reasons why JHP bullets are popular for self-defense:

1. Stopping Power: The expansion of the hollow point increases the bullet's diameter upon impact, creating a larger wound channel. This results in improved stopping power and greater energy transfer, increasing the likelihood of neutralizing a threat effectively.

2. Reduced Over-Penetration: JHP bullets are designed to expand and expend their energy within the target, minimizing the risk of over-penetration. This is particularly important in environments where bystanders may be present, as it decreases the chance of the bullet passing through the intended target and potentially causing harm to others.

3. Controlled Expansion: JHP bullets are engineered to expand reliably and consistently, ensuring the bullet's expansion is consistent across various barriers such as clothing or intermediate barriers. This helps maintain consistent terminal performance and maximizes the bullet's effectiveness.

4. Wound Cavity and Stopping Threats: The expansion of JHP bullets creates a larger wound cavity in the target, which can disrupt vital organs, muscles, and bones more effectively than non-expanding ammunition. This can contribute to stopping a threat more quickly and minimizing the danger posed to the self-defense shooter.

It's important to note that ammunition selection for self-defense should always be based on personal preference, legal considerations, and familiarity with the firearm it will be used in. Additionally, local laws and regulations may affect your choice of ammunition. It is advisable to consult local laws and seek guidance from firearms professionals when selecting self-defense ammunition.
