The Henry rifle company has been around for a long time and was patented back in 1860. Most of their models use the iconic leaver action to feed, chamber, extract and eject ammunition and have done so since their earliest model. Some of the models we are going to discuss today have very different and unique features but while looking at all the models listed in the Henry user manual, I could only find one feature that every rifle has in common and that is the inclusion of iron sights. While most models give you the option to attach a sight, all of them come with iron sights as a standard.
So, let’s begin to discuss some of Henrys different models and features that make them stand out amongst the others. To start, lets go over Henrys drastically different rifle type, the AR-7 also known as their survival rifle. This is their only model of rifle that uses a detachable magazine that can be stored in the butt stock. Its most unique feature is its ability to be taken down to pieces and stored in its butt stock along with its magazine. Most takedown rifles fold or come apart but the AR-7 is one of the only makes and models that stores completely in its stock. Next, we have Henrys Mini Bolt H005 Series Rifle designed for youth shooting. This is their only bolt action rifle listed in the user manual and doesn’t have any type of magazine or feeding device. Henry’s unique feature here is that the user places a single round in the chamber and then locks it in the barrel using its bolt. Usually with most bolt action rifles you are ready to fire at this point. However, Henry has another unique feature on their Mini Bolt H005 that requires the shooter to pull back on the cocking mechanism before it will fire.
Henry does offer a pump action model rifle with the octagon barrel known as the H0003T. This model is unique because it uses the tube fed option seen on most Henry Leaver actions but operates like a pump action shotgun. Switching to the topic of Henry’s leaver action rifle types, I realized that most of their leaver action models do not have safety selector switches. However, some models like the 30-30 and 45-70 have Henry’s “ultra-safe patented Transfer Bar Safety Mechanism.” This is not a standard selector switch like what is found on most rifles today but rather a unique failsafe design that blocks the firing mechanism if the hammer falls for any other reason other than pulling the trigger. Other henry rifles are designed with a “safe” position to cock the hammer. It can be set this way from the cocked position or the closed firing position. Some people call this the quarter cocked position, and it can be found on some single action revolvers as well. Henry has been making some amazing rifles for a long time now, proving that an oldie can indeed still be a goodie.
