Summarize the detail-stripping process of a Glock pistol.

1. Summarize the detail-stripping process.

My goal of a detailed stripping of a firearm is to get it broken down to as many pieces as possible. This ensures that no part goes untouched and allows me to inspect each part for damage or filth. Once everything is taken apart I will usually clean everything just to be sure that when it is reassembled it is in good working order.

2. List the reference materials you used to complete the procedure.

As I have a ton of experience with the Glock firearms in my day to day work and the fact that I am a certified armorer , I did not need any reference materials. If I were to recommend some to people with less experience I would say take a look at Glocks website for the downloadable material. This covers a lot of different topics and will get you acquainted with the firearm and its parts. Then look at the Glock Reference Guide, 1st & 2ND Edition written by Robb Manning because this covers everything the owner’s manuals will not.

3. How far were you able to make it through detail-stripping before requiring a specialty tool that you didn’t have access to?

Luckily I had all the tools required to complete the detailed stripping of the Glock 17 Handgun. This is not always going to be the case though because some firearms have very specific tools made just for that make and model. If I remember correctly the IWI Tavor requires a weapon specific wrench to complete the disassembly process.

4. What additional tools did you need to completely detail-strip your firearm?

The tools required to detail strip a Glock pistol are simple. A punch, Hammer and maybe a small flathead for leverage on a few parts and that’s it. This differs from a field strip in the fact that field stripping a Glock handgun requires no tools at all.

5. Did you find any steps in the progress particularly difficult? Were there any specific cautions you had to be mindful of to avoid damaging the firearm? How did you overcome those challenges?

The most difficult part for me on the Glock Gen 4 is during the reassembly process. When putting one of the pins back through the frame it must feed through the hole on the slide catch and the tiny spring bar needs to be pushed down while inserting the pin so as to be under the pin for the proper spring tension to exist.

6. Compare your results with the plan you created. Did your plan help you in this project? Did the process and results match your expectations?

After comparing my results with the plan I made initially I am happy to say everything worked out just fine. There were no broken or missing parts, and everything was disassembled and reassembled as expected. It is important to note that anytime you plan on working on any firearm, you have a plan. Grouping your parts, Labeling things, or recording yourself in the process are just a few ideas you should consider in your planning process. This usually helps to prevent losing parts and helps you figure out what pins and screws go to what parts.
